Lewis

£60

ORIGINAL PAINTING ON WOODEN PANEL, READY TO HANG

Image size 15×50cm

Gestural marks, intense colour, chequered patterns – but no chessboard to be found. Inspirations from Lewis. The gestural marks, scrapes and gashes on these two pieces are inspired by stone markings made by humans. There is evidence of Neolithic and Bronze age marks on the landscape all across the Outer Hebrides. Standing Stones and resplendent marks, carved in stone – seemingly random lines to the sophistication of pattern, circles ‘cups and rings’ to the more recent early medieval norse carvings such as those on the Lewis Chessmen.

Description

Background Story:

A reclaimed drawer front, (pine and birch ply) rescued from abandoned fly-tipping.
The remains of a fitted kitchen were abandoned on a piece of waste land used as a makeshift car
park in a local village. The framing of the drawer very reminiscent of an actual picture frame, but,
curiously no evidence of where a handle once was!
